In addition to selling Fuel Oil and Natural Gas, Columbia Utilities also sells Electricity. We continue to satisfy customers with our personal approach to business. Customers are not just numbers to us, they are people who live in the same community that we do. We want to make sure they are comfortable.
In order to entice customers to leave the Utility and feel comfortable about receiving Electricity from another supplier, the State implemented certain Tax Savings to customers who go to an ESCO for their Electricity supply. Tens of Thousands of people throughout the state have already switched their Electricity supply to an ESCO.
- To answer your question before it is asked, NO, the Utility will not be mad that you are changing companies. In fact they give you a credit on each month's bill for leaving.
- The reason the Utility will not be mad at you is because you still are a customer of the Utility.
Here is the explanation. There are two charges to your Electricity bill, one is the Delivery charge, and the other is the Supply charge. The Utility used to charge for both. Now, the Utility will continue to read the meter, and bill you for the Delivery charge, but Columbia Utilities will bill you for the Supply charge instead of the Utility.
Your savings come primarily from the tax reductions and credits given on the Delivery charge. These are all part of New York State's incentives to make deregulation work!
Be assured that in the event of an emergency, the Utility will still respond in the same manner as they always have! Safety is most important to the Utility as it is to Columbia Utilities.
